I swear, Battlefield fans have to be the unhappiest people on Earth.
They hate Modern Warfare. They hate Origin. They hate Electronic Arts and for all I can tell, they hate the game they play so much. It?s a community that seems committed to proving itself to be the most knowledgeable, least appreciated, least understood and most pissed-off class of video gamer, an uber-treehouse among our treehouse culture.
This week Battlefieldo, described as ?one of the larger Battlefield 3? communities, decided they?d had enough. Of what they have had enough, it?s still not clear. It sounds like they resent a ?lack of transparency and communication? between the game?s developers, DICE and the community, like we?re talking about representative government. Alright. This is blamed on Electronic Arts, as most things are.
Well, Battlefieldo will not be ignored! The community called for the Battlefield equivalent of a general strike. Usually a boycott is what gets attention, but when the product was sold more than four months ago, there?s not a lot of damage you can do to the bottom line. Battlefieldo called for 24 hours of silence ? no playing, no server activity, no social media mentions. That?ll show ?em!
Naturally, they?re claiming victory. They got EA/DICE to cough up patch notes, everyone! Patch notes ?including bugfixes, tweaks and gameplay balancing changes.? Oh, there?s also going to be a weekly feature on the official Battlefield Blog called ?Inside DICE?.
There?s a great deal of legitimate disenfranchisement felt in gaming, whether that is through DRM, obtuse, repeatedly revised EULAs and crap like SOPA and PIPA. The Battlefield blackout plainly sought to capture the net roots spirit that has shut down obnoxious legislation and shed light on abusive publisher practices. And yet they went pitchfork-and-torches upon DICE in order to get? patch notes and marketing copy? This is egregious self-parody even in a culture well-known for its disproportionate reactions.
If you want to talk about harm done to a video game community, Battlefield?s can start by looking at itself. I have no desire to buy or play Battlefield 3 because its community seems to be staging a pageant to determine who can be the angriest hypercritical entitled ingrate in video gaming, which is saying a hell of a lot. Look at the reaction to the multiplayer beta. Look at the reaction to DICE?s reaction. Read the comments any time anything is said about Origin or Modern Warfare 3.
Who the hell wants to be a part of that?

Manny Ramirez arrived at A?s camp in Phoenix today. ?After hitting several home runs in batting practice, he addressed the media. ?Among the things he had to say:
On the one hand: ?this is really cool. Though I?m not personally religious, I have seen how people can turn to God as a means of straightening their life out. ?Whether there really is some sort of divine intervention at work or, rather, it?s just about finding something ? anything ? with which and on which to focus their lives,?I have no idea. But it can work. ?And given the sort of trouble Manny was having in his life in his career and with his family, good for him for finding something to turn things around.
On the other hand: poor God. ?I know He is all loving and all powerful, but it?s probably been some time since He?s had someone who can try His patience like Manny can. ?Manny is probably like that kid in Catholic school who asks if God can create a rock so large that even He Himself can?t move it, only x1000 and weirder.
?Are you there God? It?s me, Manny.?
?Um, sure, Manny. One moment. I just have to see a guy about a thing.?

by Rosemarie Coppola-BaldwinLong after most of my peers had already joined Facebook, I was still holding out. I was a busy mom, working long hours with a long commute, and I just couldn?t deal with another task. About three months into my second pregnancy, my doctor put me on bed rest due to various complications, and before long, I was a Facebook convert.
The honeymoon lasted about 2.6 seconds before I realized I had been right: Facebook was another chore to contend with, mostly because reading the constant stream of live updates in my news feed often left me feeling pretty rotten about myself.
When I first joined, I was on a reconnection high. Although I couldn?t remember why I had lost touch with so many ?friends,? I was thrilled to ?see? them again. The fact that years had passed, in most cases, was irrelevant. There were a number of people I was sorry to have lost contact with, and I found Facebook to be a useful tool in rebuilding old relationships.
And then reality set in.
Suddenly, I was wondering why my school-aged son wasn?t already a virtuoso pianist and hadn?t yet been trekking through Alaska on a brain-building mission. Why wasn?t my newborn daughter reading yet? Should we get a dog? And why didn?t I ever learn to crochet? I was repeatedly inundated with self-doubt in the form of Facebook posts. Punch after self-esteem-crushing punch, I willed myself to be happy for my Facebook friends. But most of the time, I just stared at the screen, thinking, ?I must be an awful wife/mother/sister, [fill in the blank], because I didn?t do/buy/go to [fill in the blank].?
How could I possibly be and do all those things flooding my news feed on a daily basis?
Well, I couldn?t. It took some time, but eventually I realized that the problem wasn?t Facebook: it was me. Facebook only provided me with another medium in which to raise self-doubt and self-loathing, and succumb to peer pressure. (Yes, I will ? sheepishly ? admit, I tried to potty train my daughter before she was ready based on Facebook posts of moms with similar-aged kids. Not my finest moment.)
I was always the one to tell others, ?Who cares what other people think or are doing?! Do what?s best for you.? I still live that way? except when I?m on Facebook.
It?s like that blue and white screen sucks me into another world filled with shining accomplishments, phenomenal vacations, perfect kids, and overall enviable lives. Could it all be for real? Was the rest of the non-Facebook world living this way?
I couldn?t be the only person with this question. In fact, I seem to remember someone writing on their Wall once, ?Good morning, fa?ade book.? Yup, there it was.Very few people (me, included) are willing to post how hard it is to manage a job, a house, and raise kids ? it?s like all the messy bits of parenting somehow evaporate between posts of father-daughter dances and Disney vacations. Seriously? Parenting is so much more cluttered than that. I know, I know: who wants to read about the chaos when they?re living it? So, really, how much of Facebook is real?
I had pretty much decided to delete my account when I began noticing another trend that gave me pause: posts about a sick parent, a friend experiencing a difficult pregnancy, prayers for an ill child. I watched, somewhat amazed, at the outpouring of support from dozens of fellow Facebook users. I have been moved to tears at times by the words and deeds prompted by the posts shared by users having a difficult time. This use of the social media, to me, balanced out all the other stuff. And it was very real.
So, if I?m being honest, all that other stuff is just that: stuff. Just because someone went skydiving or took their child to swim with the dolphins doesn?t mean I have to do so, or even that I have to care. Facebook is just one more lesson to us women (and us moms) that we have to rise above any superficial and materialistic tendencies to successfully navigate life?s messy bits. We have to force ourselves to focus on the important things, like supporting those who need us and making decisions based on what is best for us and for our families.
I have learned to love (and use) Facebook for the benefits it does bring ? that additional medium of connectivity and support between old and new friends that might not exist without this social media. But once I turn off my computer, for my own and my family?s sanity, that world must be forgotten.

So as to effectively appeal to customers, you need to prove that you are worth their time. Long story down, they have to like you and what you have got to offer. Online video production is especially effective at this as it bring a face to your service which is overall more preferable to emotionless text.
Only by reaching your audience at an emotionally engaging level will you achieve success at getting your idea across and convincing the user that what you say holds some value. Since the rise of video promoting, typical sales letters are a thing of the past. You simply can?t guarantee that text will be as effective as it once was, particularly if your competitors has moved.
Online video production is a technique of bringing back the personal touch of an interacting with a sales man. When mixed with the distributional potential of the Net from Melbourne video production, you get a means of personally appealing to thousands of people with an absolutely mechanical system. It?s not sufficient to simply make a video and post it. Before you?re selling, you need to grasp the basic concepts of what make an excellent promotional video.
First, you need to appeal to your consumers with a problem. In storytelling, this is the first part of the three act structure and is meant to catalyze interest. Start by appealing to their interest and explaining the biggest benefit of your product ? which is also the benefit of watching your video.
A great thing to try next is to start telling a tale in order that they can relate to you better , this is eventually how you may attract a following over just selling products. Tell them, who you are, how you were given there, and how you?ve helped folk and how what it all has to do with your service.
The conclusion of your Unique Article Wizard Review video should invariably be the very next step that they have to take. This is the call-to-action and it?s definitely necessary that you make the method clear for them. It isn?t enough for them to grasp you?ve a great product , you need to give folk easily understandable instructions on what to do. Make sure that whatever your call-to-action asks of them, that you make it sound as simple as possible and it should only be a one step process.
If you?re new to online video production and haven?t created a sign video in your life, in order to start you need to keep two things in mind: content and consistency. All you really need is the right information, and the determination to keep making videos and everything else will come naturally.
As far as your online video production equipment, all you really need is a laptop camera. Keep in mind that your first videos are going to be awful compared to what you will achieve over time. If you want to go and start making videos right after this article, first thing is to write a script, implement all the points above, practice your script until it?s as smooth as possible, record and upload, repeat.

Convertible cribs like the DaVinci Emily can be turned into toddler beds, daybeds, and full-size beds as a child grows.
By Kara Reinhardt, Cheapism.com
Celebrity watchers crave even the slightest bit of news on the baby girl born last month to music moguls Beyonce and Jay-Z. No detail is too small, down to reports that she sleeps in an ultramodern Lucite crib with a $3,500 price tag. Lucky for parents without endorsement deals and top-grossing world tours, high-quality cribs can be had for less than $200.
Whether they?re made of transparent acrylic or regular old wood, new cribs must conform to standards set in 2011 by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. The CPSC requires all models to undergo rigorous safety testing and has outlawed traditional drop-side cribs, which let parents lower one of the rails and lift the baby out. On cribs with fixed sides, the height of the mattress can typically be adjusted depending on the age of the child, so it sits highest for a newborn and lowest for an active toddler. If you?re short or have a bad back, more mattress levels can help ensure you?ll be able to reach over the rail to pick up the child.
These days, convertible cribs dominate the market. These 2-in-1, 3-in-1, or 4-in-1 models can be transformed into a toddler bed, daybed, and/or full-size bed as a child grows. They generally don?t cost any more than standard cribs, but most require a separate conversion kit priced at $100 or more. Traditional cribs are becoming far less common, although some parents still prefer them. Maybe you have a nursery that?s too small for a bulky bed or plan to have another child right away. You may prefer to hand down a standard crib and buy the older child a conventional bed.
Few cribs come with mattresses, which can add anywhere from $40 to $150 to the total cost. The standard mattress size of 27 1/4 by 51 5/8 inches works for most cribs, but it?s important to make sure the mattress you choose fits snugly. Test it in a display model at the store or in the assembled crib at home (just be sure you can return it). If two fingers fit in any gaps between the mattress and the sides of the crib, you could be compromising your child?s safety.
Below are Cheapism?s top picks for affordable cribs.

February is Heart Month. Did you know heart disease is the number one killer of women? Most women fear breast cancer. They routinely get their mammograms and do self checks each month. But what about your heart? What do you do to keep your heart healthy everyday? Most women, especially younger women, think heart disease is something you don?t have to think about till you are at least 70. Unfortunately, that is not the case. I have worked in cardiac rehabilitation for more than 10 years. During that time, there has been an increase of younger people having coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), heart attacks and stenting. The youngest patient I ever had was in her late 20s. It was scary that she was actually younger than me!
There are multiple risk factors for heart disease. The ones you can?t control are:
Male sex
Older age
Family history of heart disease
Post-menopausal
Race (African Americans, American Indians, and Mexican Americans are more likely to have heart disease than Caucasians)
Controllable risk factors include:
Smoking
High LDL or ?lousy? cholesterol and low HDL or ?healthy? choleserol
Uncontrolled hypertension (high blood pressure)
Physical inactivity
Obesity
Uncontrolled diabetes
High C-recative protein
Uncontrolled stress and anger
Physical activity is something that is linked to all the controllable risk factors. If you are already active, great! Keep it up! Don?t let the daily ?to do? list get in the way. Make time for exercise by scheduling it in like you would a doctor?s appointment.
First up: Cardio
You should aim for at least 150 minutes each week of moderate exercise.or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise. ?An easy way to remember: 30 minutes at least five days a week. Moderate exercise can be defined as something that gets your pulse and breathing rates up. If you can sing while exercising, it?s too light! A brisk walk is considered moderate. Vigorous exercise is more like running or singles tennis. You should be able to speak in phases.
Here?s a great walking workout that can be done on the treadmill. Modify the speeds to meet your needs. You could easily adapt this for running by increasing the speed.
| Time | Speed | Incline |
| 0-5 | 3-3.5 mph | 1% |
| 5-7 | 4 mph | 3% |
| 7-9 | 4 mph | 5% |
| 9-11 | 4 mph | 7% |
| 11-16 | 3.5 mph | 10% |
| 16-21 | 3.5 mph | 8% |
| 21-22 | 4 mph | 4% |
| 22-23 | 4.3 mph | 4% |
| 23-24 | 4.3 mph | 4% |
| 24-25 | 4 mph | 4% |
| 25-26 | 4.3 mph | 4% |
| 26-27 | 4 mph | 4% |
| 27-29 | 4.3 mph | 10% |
| 29-31 | 3.5 mph | 8% |
| 31-33 | 3.5 mph | 6% |
| 33-35 | 3.7 mph | 4% |
| 35-38 | 3.8 mph | 2% |
| 38-40 | 4.3 mph | 2% |
| 40-45 | 3.5-3.0 mph | 0% |
Next: Strength Training
You should be hitting the weights at least two to three times each week. Strength training increases muscular strength, endurance, independence and ability to perform a large range of activities. It reduces disability and enhances quality of life. Other benefits include increase in-bone mineral density and lean body mass. A well rounded program should involve the major muscle groups of the upper and lower body: chest press, shoulder press, triceps extension, bicep curl, lat pull-down, lower-back extension, abdominal crunch/curl, quad extension, leg press, leg curl and calf raise.? Aim for 12 to 15 repetitions, 2 to 3 sets of each exercise.
Heart disease is scary but with the proper nutrition and exercise throughout your life, you will have the essentials on how to love your heart and have it love you right back.

The Fujitsu ScanSnap S1300 ($295 direct) isn't unique in offering what are usually desktop conveniences in a portable scanner. However it's one of the of the few, along with the similarly priced Editors' Choice Canon imageFormula P-150 Scan-tini ($295, 4 stars), that includes both an automatic document feeder (ADF) and the ability to scan both sides of a page as quickly as it can scan one side. In truth, the P-150 outshines the S1300 in many ways, from its faster speed to its smaller size and weight. But the S1300 offers some strengths of its own, including much better business card scanning, to keep it very much in the running.
At 3 by 11.2 by 3.9 inches (HWD), the S1300 is on the large side for a portable, and at 3.1 pounds, it's about a pound heavier than that the P-150. Even so, it's small enough to be reasonably portable or to serve as a particularly small desktop scanner for light duty scanning. The ADF is limited to 10 sheets, which is only half of the P-150's capacity, but it's infinitely better than the one-page at a time manual feed that you'll find on most other portables.
Setup and Software
For my tests, I connected the S1300 to a system running Windows Vista. Set up is reasonably typical. One unusual touch is that, unlike most portables, you can't connect just one USB cable to get it to work. Instead, you have the choice of plugging in a power adaptor also, or plugging in a second USB cable, which means tying up two USB ports.
The software that comes with the S1300 includes a scan utility, a document management program called ScanSnap Organizer, and a business card management program. In addition, an optical character recognition (OCR) module, ABBYY FineReader for ScanSnap 4.1, works with both the scan utility and document management program to let you turn scanned documents into editable text or searchable PDF files.
In another unusual touch for scanners in general, the S1300 doesn't come with a driver that would let you scan directly from most Windows programs that have their own scan commands. As I've pointed out in other ScanSnap reviews, most recently my review of the ScanSnap S1100 ($199, 3.5 stars), this is standard for Fujitsu's ScanSnap models. Fujitsu insists on locking you into its own idiosyncratic approach to scanning, which you may or may not consider a problem, depending on your own tastes and work habits.
Scanning
In most cases, instead of letting you scan from within a given program, the S1300 makes you scan first and then send the scanned file to the program. However, if you first define the target application in the scan utility, you can scan and send with one command. As an alternative, you can scan and send the file to ScanSnap Organizer, and then use the commands in Organizer to send the file to a program in a separate step.
With either choice, if you send the file to a word processor, the OCR module will convert it to editable text, if you haven't OCRed it already. You can also set the program to save text files as searchable PDFs, or save them as image PDF files and recognize the text later, either automatically when the computer is otherwise idle, or immediately on command.
Ironically, Fujitsu's own business card program, CardMinder, is the one case that breaks the rule of not letting you scan from within a program. With CardMinder you can either scan first and send the scan to the program, or you can open the program first, and give a scan command.
Test Results
The best that can be said of the S1300's speed is that it's acceptable for a portable scanner. In my tests, using a 10 page document, I timed scanning without recognizing the text, at 5.9 pages per minute (ppm) for simplex (one sided) scans and 11.7 images per minute (ipm) for duplex scans (with one image on each side of the page).
That makes the S1300 a lot faster than any manual feed scanner. On the other hand, the P-150 came in at 10.3 ppm and 19.2 ipm, leaving the S1300 in the dust. The P-150 also took almost no additional time to recognize the text, adding only 4 seconds to OCR 50 pages of text. The S1300 took almost a minute extra to OCR 20 pages.
The S1300's 600 ppi maximum optical resolution is more than enough for high quality document scanning, as indicated by it's scores on our OCR accuracy test. The scanner and software combination read both our Times New Roman and Arial test pages at sizes as small as 8 points without a mistake. As I've already mentioned, the scanner also did a reasonably good job with business cards, reading about half the cards in our test suite without a mistake.
Although the S1300 can't match the P-150 for size, weight, or speed, and it loses points for lacking a standard driver, it's actually a little easier to setup than the P-150, and I suspect that anyone who isn't already familiar with scanning will find the software easier to use than most typical scan software. The S1300 certainly has the edge over the P-150 for business cards, and it's just as certainly a reasonable choice as a highly capable portable scanner. Unless you absolutely can't live without a standard scan driver, the S1300 is, at the very, least worth a serious look.

Dutch scientist Mark Post displays samples of lab-grown meat at the University of Maastricht.
By Alan Boyle
The quest to grow meat in a lab rather than on an animal is due to reach its climax this fall, with the first-ever culture-dish hamburger served to a celebrity taster after a $330,000 development effort.
Mark Post, a physiologist at the University of Maastricht in the Netherlands, said the project is being funded by an anonymous investor who is interested in "life-transforming technologies" and believes lab-grown meat could revolutionize the food industry.
"It's a reputable source of money, I can tell you," Post said today in Vancouver, Canada, at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Post hopes the tasting will be a media event, with experimental chef Heston Blumenthal cooking the burger. The patty will be much like a regular quarter-pounder?? but with one big difference: This one will be created by growing bovine stem cells in a vat, transforming them into thousands of thin layers of beef muscle cells, mincing them into tiny pieces, then combining the bits with lab-grown animal fat to form a lump of meat the size of a golf ball.
Would you be more willing or less willing to eat a hamburger that was made in a lab?

If Post and his colleagues succeed, it would mark a technological triumph after years of working to improve upon the current, millennia-old method for making meat. Researchers in the field say the livestock industry in its current incarnation is too energy-intensive and land-intensive for a global population that's rising in numbers and affluence.
Meat production already takes up more than half of the world's estimated agricultural capacity, in one way or another. U.N. figures show that animal farming takes up 30 percent of the planet's exposed land mass. And over the next 40 years, the demand for meat products is expected to double.
If the researchers' assumptions are correct, growing meat in the lab "could reduce the energy expenditure by about 40 percent," Post said. Lab-grown meat has also won the endorsement of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA, because the stem cells could be extracted without killing animals.
The money behind the meat
Post has been talking about serving up the first lab-grown burger for a long time, but it took the anonymous 250,000-euro ($330,000) contribution to turn the dream into reality. Traditional meat producers weren't interested in changing their ways, and were doubtful about success, he said. "Most people don't believe it's ever going to happen," he told reporters.
When Post started working on the project, he focused on growing stem cells from pigs to create a lab-grown sausage, but he said "my financier was not very interested in sausages."
There's still a long way to go between now and the celebrity cookout: Post said he doesn't yet know what the burger would taste like, because the samples that have been grown so far are too small. The pinkish-yellowish strips of muscle cells are only about an inch (3 centimeters) long, a half-inch (1.5 centimeter) wide, and so thin (1 millimeter) that they're semi-transparent. Post feels confident that his team can perfect the process by October, but full commercialization could take another 10 years or more.
The good news is that if there's someone out there willing to buy the second lab-grown hamburger, they can get it for "an extreme reduction in price," Post told me. He estimates that piece of meat should cost just 200,000 euros ($263,000).
Beyond meat
It's worth asking whether the quest to grow lab-grown meat is worth the effort, considering that there are already vegetarian alternatives to meat. Aren't tofurky and field roast good enough? Post and others note that such products haven't made a significant dent in the meat market, and are generally more expensive than the meat items they're meant to replace.
"If there is a vegetable-derived product that can take away the human being's craving for meat, that would be preferable," Post said.
Stanford University biochemist Patrick Brown says he's working on precisely that kind of stuff, and it could be on the market in the next year or so.
"We have a class of products that just totally rocks and cannot be distinguished from the animal-based product it replaces, even by hardcore foodies," he said. He promised that his plant-based alternatives to meat and dairy products would be tasty, nutritious ? and profitable.
"I think it's going to be one of the easier things I've done," he said.
Brown joked that he couldn't talk about the details, "because if I did, I'd have to kill you." He'd say only that he "had no trouble getting investment" from a Silicon Valley venture-capital firm. To commercialize the concept, two ventures have been set up with placeholder names: Sand Hill Foods and Jasper Ridge Creamery.
The way Brown sees it, the meat industry is a "sitting duck for disruptive technology," offering a rich target for alternatives. He said the wholesale market for unprocessed meat has been estimated at $150 billion a year, which is 250 times the current market for meat alternatives.
Even though Post said the meat industry has been generally standoffish about lab alternatives, some companies are going against the grain: Nicholas Genovese, a visiting scholar at the University of Missouri at Columbia, told journalists that JBS, one of the world's biggest meat-packing companies, was interested in his parallel effort to grow meat in the lab.

If you are looking to purchase a TV set for your son's birthday you might want to go towards one engineered for gaming. And, if you are going to be playing video games on your TV you want one with 120 Hz which is the refresh rate on the screen; with 120 Hz you can play games comfortably and with no ghosting Because most video games move extremely fast, some screens with lower Hz really can't handle it, so remember that! Remember to check the dimensions of the TV and to measure the spot you are going to be placing it in. It is equally advisable to take precaution by determining the room of the house where the set will be fixed. The dimensions of the room and the television location spot can influence your choice of TV and it is better to check everything rather than returning the television because it does not fit, can lead to many other uncomfortable situations.Another thing to consider is if you are going in the LCD and LED direction or Plasma road. Now there are a couple of advantages to both types of television technologies. It really depends on what you prefer. If you prefer TV sets that highlight the darker area of images, Plasma TV will be your choice. Plasma TVs also allow you to see the image clearly at difficult angles, if you are doing the dishes for example. Moreover, if you are one the consumers that like to save on power and thereby reduce expenses, LCD or LED televisions will be good for you; they have been designed to help save energy and they are budget friendly when it comes to using them. I personally think that LED TVs are of the highest quality particularly those from the brand names such as Samsung and LG and this opinion can be corroborated by the different studies that gave the same conclusion.
Remember when purchasing a TV you want to do your research online first and go to the store with a general idea of what you are looking for. Ask for some help from a technology expert as well, and just check out the TVs you are interested in in personal. Another reflex that will pay you is to revert back to the web and compare prices of your chosen HDTV as you stand the chance of making some savings.
If you are looking into purchasing a quality LED-LCD (awesome technology) TV then the best place to start would be the LG 55LW5600 HDTV. I am personally awed at the ingenuity displayed in that TV; follow the link and read the review of that product. Another awesome component to add to your entertainment cent would be the Logitech Revue; this little gadget allows you to link your computer and TV and do all kinds of cool stuff.

SEATTLE (AP) ? A federal judge in Seattle declined to immediately restrain the activities of a Washington state-based anti-whaling group Thursday.
Judge Richard Jones said he would issue a written ruling later, but that he's inclined to deny a request for a preliminary injunction made by Japanese whalers against the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.
The whalers ? the Institute for Cetacean Research ? said the Sea Shepherd group has attacked and rammed their ships off Antarctica during the whaling season, and asked the judge to order them to stop. Some of the clashes have been shown on the "Whale Wars" reality TV show.
Sea Shepherd activists use stink bombs and other nonlethal means to interfere with the whalers. The group argues that its activities are supported by international law, that the court doesn't have jurisdiction in the Southern Ocean, and that it's the whalers who have rammed its vessels.
In a federal lawsuit filed in Seattle on Dec. 8, the institute argued that the whalers are "entitled to be free from attack by what are essentially self-proclaimed pirates with a base in the state of Washington."
Japan's whaling fleet kills up to 1,000 whales a year, an allowed exception under a ruling by the International Whaling Commission. Japan is permitted to hunt the animals as long as they are caught for research and not commercial purposes. Whale meat not used for study is sold as food in Japan, which critics say is the real reason for the hunts.
Activists launched or threw glass bottles containing paint or butyric acid in one attack last year, the captain of a whaling vessel said in an affidavit translated from Japanese.
"A crew member could be blinded in such an attack," said Tomoyuki Ogawa, captain of the Nisshin Maru. "These attacks also cause fear in the crew, thus interfering with the prompt and accurate carrying out of orders."
Sea Shepherd president Paul Watson said in documents that his activists have never injured any whalers. He accused the whalers of attacking activists with concussion grenades, long-range acoustical devices, bamboo spears, heavy nuts and bolts, water cannons and prop foulers.
Each hunting season runs from about December through February. Sea Shepherd has sent boats to the waters off Antarctica for the past several years in an attempt to thwart the hunt. The two sides have occasionally had violent clashes, including a skirmish in which a Sea Shepherd boat was sunk after its bow was sheared off in a collision with a whaling ship.
