Panetta: Punish ex-SEAL who wrote on bin Laden raid

The tell-all book by a former Navy SEAL on the Osama bin Laden raid raises questions as to whether there ever was a plan other than executing the terrorist leader on sight. NBC's Jim Miklaszewski reports.

By NBC News staff and wire services

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said revelations in a book written by a retired Navy SEAL on the raid that killed al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden could put future operations in jeopardy and suggested that the writer should be punished for writing the best-seller.?

In an interview with CBS News on Tuesday, Panetta was asked if he thinks the writer should be prosecuted.?"I think we have to take steps to make clear to him and to the American people that we're not going to accept this kind of behavior," Panetta said.

Panetta was referring to "No Easy Day," the newly published account of the raid that led to bin Laden's killing in May 2011 in Pakistan. The book was written by a retired SEAL under the pseudonym of Mark 0wen. The author has denied the book contained any information that could adversely affect national security.

Ex-Navy SEAL faces legal jeopardy for writing about bin Laden raid

Panetta said that if the Defense Department failed to take any action in response to the book, "then everybody else who pledges to ensure that that doesn't happen is going to get the long signal, that somehow they can do it without any penalty to be paid."?

Asked if the revelations could put future such operations at risk, Panetta said, "I think when someone who signs an obligation that he will not reveal the secrets of this kind of operation, and then does that and doesn't abide by the rules, that when he reveals that kind of information, it does indeed jeopardize operations and the lives of others that are involved in those operations."

Commander: Navy SEALs reveal too many secrets

The secretary stopped short of accusing the author of revealing classified information, but said Pentagon officials "are currently reviewing that book to determine exactly, you know, what is classified and what isn't, and where those lines are."

Panetta said the book, which went on sale this week, raises troubling national security questions. The book is the top seller on online retailer Amazon.com.

"Well, I think when somebody talks about the particulars of how those operations are conducted, it tells our enemies, essentially, how we operate and what we do to go after them," he said.

Last week, the commander of the Naval Special Warfare Command sent a letter to members of the special operations community warning them to stop releasing details about their secretive world.

"We do NOT advertise the nature of our work, NOR do we seek recognition for our actions," wrote the commander, Rear Adm.Sean Pybus wrote.

How Can CMS Impede Your SEO Activities?

Definitions:

Let us begin with the definitions of the two terms under discussion.

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) refers to the various techniques and practices used to attract more traffic from search engines.

CMS (Content Management System) is a software package which enables the user to manage, publish, store and retrieve large amounts of online data.

It is clear from these definitions that SEO and CMS relate to different disciplines. Combining these two items as one entity has many advantages for the users, but the process has to be handled with special care and precision to avoid the many pitfalls on the way. We shall consider some of these problems in the following paragraphs.

Problems with CMS:

In most cases, the CMS systems are not designed for working in tandem with SEO.

Most SEO personnel have a non-technical background and will not be able to handle the CMS functions.

Most CMS users, such as content authors, are not familiar with SEO and its requirements.

Content authors are also not conversant with the SEO tools used to create web content.

Most CMS systems are not search engine-friendly and will negate the efforts of SEO.

Many CMS systems do not allow correct Meta tags with ?title? and ?description? to content, which are crucial for search engines to index the pages.

As search engines are programmed to limit the number of dynamic URLs they index, it is advisable to use only static URLs as much as possible.

Fortunately, almost all of these deficiencies are correctable and should be addressed before the SEO with CMS combination can be successfully implemented.

Choosing a good CMS:

The first emphasis should be on quality. The chosen CMS should also be compliant with all legal requirements and be search engine-friendly. It should pass the W3C online validation test. Another important factor is that the chosen CMS should be standards compliant and that the site uses the correct web codes.

Of late, it is being observed that many CMS, especially in the open source segment, are designed with very high standards. However, their commercial counterparts are lagging behind in this respect.

There are other areas of concern, too, such as the code layout scheme, which often uses the obsolete tables as the layout base. The present trend is to supplant it by the CSS method, which offers better accessibility.

Similarly, the old flat layer (raster) layout scheme is becoming outdated and is being superseded by the vector system, with tremendous advantages such as replacing 2D with 3D systems (employing the x, y, and z axes).

The importance of quality:

As a group, CMS developers do not appear to appreciate the importance of quality control and how lack of quality affects the commercial success and viability of an organization. They should realize that compliance with web standards take precedence over all other factors. Quality management in CMS should be top class if the website is to achieve brand recognition and financial prosperity. It is therefore advisable to recruit new managers with specialist knowledge and experience in the latest quality control techniques.

SEO with CMS:

There is no gainsaying the fact that the combination of SEO with CMS will achieve significant improvements, and that all companies will eventually adopt this method. When you use an up-to-date, high-quality CMS, you can be sure that you are moving ahead of the competition in your field.

Pope: Beirut trip is Mideast peace pilgrimage

CASTEL GANDOLFO, Italy (AP) ? Pope Benedict XVI on Sunday characterized his trip to Beirut later this week as a pilgrimage for peace for the entire Middle East region and its anguished people.

Benedict told pilgrims at his summer residence in Castel Gandolfo near Rome that while finding solutions for the Middle East's problems seems difficult, people "shouldn't resign themselves to violence or worsening tensions."

He noted that during his three-day visit to the Lebanese capital, which begins Friday, he would meet with Lebanese authorities as well as Christians from Lebanon and other nearby countries.

"I am not unaware of the often dramatic situation endured by the populations of this region which has been for too long torn by incessant conflict," Benedict said. "I understand the anguish of many Middle Easterners steeped daily in sufferings of every kind, which afflict sadly, and sometimes mortally, their personal and family life."

The pope urged the international community to support efforts at dialogue and reconciliation, as he stressed "the importance for the whole world of a stable and lasting peace in the entire region.

"My apostolic voyage in Lebanon, and by extension in the Middle East in its entirety, comes under the sign of peace," Benedict said.

In recent weeks there was concern that spillover in parts of Lebanon from the fighting in Syria might derail the trip by the 85-year-old pontiff. But the Vatican has assured the faithful that despite a climate of tensions in Lebanon the pilgrimage is going forward.

Benedict's visit is also aimed at encouraging his flock in the Middle East. Some Christian communities there have suffered for their faith, including terror attacks in Iraq.

His schedule also includes his celebrating Mass in Beirut and attending a gathering with youth.

Tulane safety Devon Walker hurt in game at Tulsa

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) ? Tulane safety Devon Walker was seriously hurt Saturday in a head-to-head collision with a teammate during a game with Tulsa.

Tulane assistant athletic director Roger Dunaway confirmed Walker was hurt and taken off the field in an ambulance that transported him to a Tulsa hospital. Dunaway said he didn't know what type of injury Walker sustained or his medical condition.

Tulsa was leading 35-3 and facing a fourth-and-2 with the ball at the 33-yard line when the Golden Hurricane called timeout. Tulane then called timeout.

When play resumed, Tulsa quarterback Cody Green tossed a short pass to Willie Carter, who caught it at about the 28, and turned upfield. He was tackled around the 18-yard line, with defensive tackle Julius Warmsley and Walker sandwiching him and apparently smashing the crowns of their helmets into each other.

Medical personnel from both teams came out about 12:37 p.m. to attend to Walker as he lay on the field. FOX Sports reported that Walker stopped breathing as emergency medical workers were removing his jersey and shoulder pads. They administered CPR and fluids before Walker began breathing again.

About 12:52 p.m., he was lifted onto a stretcher and loaded into a waiting ambulance about two minutes later. The ambulance drove off the field about 1 p.m.

FOX Sports reported a hush went over the crowd at H.A. Stadium as Walker was attended to on the field, and that several coaches were in tears. Spectators bowed their heads as someone on the field led the stadium in prayer.

The game resumed at 1:20 p.m.

Walker is a senior majoring in cell and molecular biology. His brother, Raynard, told The Associated Press that their mother was watching the game on television when her son was injured.

The family was waiting for an update on Walker's condition, he said.

"We haven't heard much at all," he added. "We're still kind of in the dark right now."

Delta looking into North Dakota crude for refinery

Delta Air Lines is looking into buying cheaper North Dakota crude oil to feed its new refinery near Philadelphia, instead of the more expensive overseas crude that has fed the refinery in the past.

Delta bought the idled refinery at Trainer, Pa., in June. Like most East Coast refineries, it has refined mostly North Sea oil that arrived by ship and is priced in London.

Brent crude has been consistently more expensive than the West Texas Intermediate crude that governs pricing for oil from North Dakota. On Thursday, WTI futures were almost $18 per barrel cheaper than those for Brent crude.

North Dakota oil would come by train to Delta's refinery, Delta President Ed Bastian said at an analyst conference on Thursday. Delta is already in discussions with railroads about getting oil to the Trainer refinery. By some estimates, it can cost as much as $15 per barrel to haul oil from North Dakota to the East Coast.

Delta is working "24-7" to get the refinery running by the end of this month, Bastian said.

The airline spent $11.8 million on jet fuel last year. It's hoping to slice that bill by $300 million ? and Bastian said the savings would be higher with North Dakota crude.

One risk is that the discount for North Dakota oil could go away. Bastian said the airline is studying that risk as it looks into shifting its source for oil.

North Dakota oil production has more than tripled in the last three years, according to the Energy Information Administration. It is now the country's second-biggest oil-producing state, trailing only Texas.

Much of the North Dakota crude is already moving by rail because of limited access to pipelines. The number of rail cars hauling crude oil and petroleum products jumped more than 38 percent during the first half of this year compared to the same period last year, according to the Association of American Railroads.

The new owners of another refinery in Philadelphia have said they plan a high-speed train unloading facility to handle up to 140,000 barrels per day of domestic oil. Delta spokesman Trebor Banstetter declined to comment on whether Delta is working with the other refinery on the rail project.

Delta shares rose 35 cents, or 3.9 percent, to $9.23 in afternoon trading amid a broad market rally.

In Newton, GOP winner Sean Bielat calls for 'something new'

Sean Bielat is the Republican nominee for the Fourth Congressional district--once again.

Bielat, a former Marine Corps reservist, will go on to face Democrat Joe Kennedy III, the son of former Congressman Joe Kennedy II and grandson of former Attorney General Robert Kennedy, in the general election in November. Bielat beat former Romney administration official and Brookline psychiatrist Elizabeth Childs and Fall River dentist David Steinhof for the Republican nomination Thursday night capturing 72 percent of the votes in the district.

Referencing the closing night of the Democratic National Convention and President Barack Obama?s speech in his acceptance speech, Bielat said, ?most people in this country recognize we don?t need the same, we need something new.?

The candidate said the sentiment of change starts with the 4th district and stretches all the way to Washington, D.C.

Bielat, a Norfolk resident, lost the race for the seat to outgoing Congressman Barney Frank by an 11-point margin in 2010. He was the first serious opponent Frank, a liberal stalwart, had in his more than three decades in Congress. Frank announced in November that he wouldn?t seek a 17th term in Congress, citing the newly reconfigured district.

Now that he captured the nomination, Bielat and his campaign looked to the general election and his new opponent, Kennedy. The mention of Kennedy?s name triggered boos from the crowd of Bielat supporters in the State Room of the Newton Crowne Plaza. The campaign accused Kennedy, a former prosecutor in Middlesex County and Cape Cod and the Islands and a former Peace Corps volunteer, of being unqualified to serve in Congress.

?Joe Kennedy III has money and Sean is qualified,? said Bielat?s wife Hope, listing off her husband?s professional degrees from Harvard and the University of Pennsylvania. ?Joe Kennedy III does not have the qualifications to be a Congressman.?

Bielat?s wife chalked up Kennedy?s success in the race so far to his family?s political clout. Kennedy raised $1.3 million in the last fundraising quarter, far more than his opponents.

?Joe Kennedy III was born with a silver spoon in his mouth,? Hope Bielat said.

Bielat?s supporters said they are confident in his ability to take on a member of the famous political dynasty.

?Kennedy is really up against a formidable foe,? said Tom Mountain, chairman of the Newton Republican City Committee. ?To put it bluntly, it?s going to be the Marine Corps against the Peace Corps.?

Mountain said the party won?t let the Congressional seat return to the Democratic party.

?He will win this campaign,? Mountain said.

Bielat?s 2010 candidacy garnered some high-profile endorsements including former Republican presidential nominee and Arizona Sen. John McCain and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

The crowd anxiously awaited the results Thursday night as they were glued to a projector screen in the ballroom. The race was one of the last few to be called Thursday night. Childs? campaign sent out a concession email at 9:45 p.m. and called Bielat shortly before that.

Bill Heck, a 2010 Newton mayoral candidate, told the Newton TAB Thursday that Bielat will serve the country well.

?He?s a real person,? said Heck. ?He?s well-founded, industrious and wants to really deal with the issues that matter.?

Judge approves DOJ settlement in e-book case

(AP) ? A federal judge has approved a U.S. government settlement with three major publishers accused of conspiring with Apple to fix the prices of electronic books.

The ruling released Thursday requires the publishers, Hachette, HarperCollins and Simon & Shuster, to abandon a pricing system that they conceived in 2010 when Apple Inc. released the iPad and began selling digital books in its iTunes store.

U.S. District Judge Denise Cote approved the deal nearly five months after the Justice Department filed an antitrust lawsuit alleging Apple worked with the largest digital book publishers to rig a system designed to counteract Amazon.com's pricing practices.

Apple is fighting the lawsuit's allegations along with two other book publishers, Macmillan and the Penguin Group. They will attempt to make their case in a trial next June.

(AP Photo/Fernando Vergara, File)

(AP) ? President Juan Manuel Santos announced on Tuesday a preliminary accord with Colombia's main leftist rebel group to launch talks aimed at ending a stubborn, century-old conflict that has claimed tens of thousands of lives.

In a nationally televised speech, Santos called the agreement a roadmap to "a definitive peace" and said it was reached after six months of direct talks in Cuba, with that country's government and Norway serving as brokers following a year and a half of preparatory work.

The agreement does not include a cease-fire. Nor does it grant a safe haven to the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, as occurred during the last peace talks, which lasted three years and ended disastrously in 2002.

The talks to end the Western Hemisphere's longest-running conflict will begin in the first half of October in Oslo, Norway, and continue in Havana, Santos said.

FARC leaders held a news conference later Tuesday in Havana.

Santos said the talks, the fourth with the peasant-based FARC in three decades, would be different from past talks because they have "a realistic agenda" that includes the FARC agreeing to eventually lay down its arms and become integrated into the country's political life.

Other Colombian rebel movements, most notably M-19 in 1990, have done that successfully.

Santos, a social progressive who dealt the FARC major blows as defense minister from 2006-2009, said key topics would be agrarian reform, returning stolen land, reducing poverty and compensating victims.

Santos said one major point on the agenda was drug trafficking, highly sensitive because it is believed to be the FARC's main funding source.

The FARC, classified as an international terror organization by the U.S. State Department, is only one of various illegal armed groups in Colombia funded by the drug trade.

They include remnants of far-right militias known as paramilitaries that were created to fight the FARC in the 1980s and became private armies for drug traffickers and wealth landholders. The paramilitaries made peace with Santos' predecessor, Alvaro Uribe, who opposes peace talks with the FARC.

Santos said the talks would not be open-ended.

"They will be measured in months, not in years," he said. He did not, however, set a deadline. Nor did he say when the accord was signed.

Santos is mindful of Colombia's strongly conservative bent, and was firm about what he called the government's insistence on not ceding an inch of territory.

"If there are not advances, we simply won't continue," he said, adding that "military operations will continue with the same or stepped up intensity."

Santos also did not mention a major potential obstacle to peace: amnesty for rebel leaders. A law his government sponsored that was passed in June sets a framework for amnesties and pardons for rebel and military leaders.

How to create a simple retirement plan | Oxstones Investment Club?

There was a period in my life when I couldn?t bear to think about retirement planning.?I didn?t know how to do it. I didn?t think I could afford it. I only knew the problem grew worse with every day I ignored it.

So I blanked it out. It was a big, self-inflating ball of worry but it was invisible. Like a personal climate change problem, I pretended everything was hunky-dory by shutting off the voices of doom in a soundproof part of my brain.

If only I knew how easy creating a workable retirement plan could be!

First things first: It?s vitally important to define your investment goals. Without knowing your destination, you can?t work out how to get there.

A large-scale, life-altering project like investing for retirement may seem too abstract, distant, and difficult to deal with. Yet it can be done quite quickly by stringing together a few logical steps and employing a?retirement calculator to crunch the numbers.

Creating your retirement plan

Before the calculators can whir, we need to sketch out our retirement vision and the key factors that will make it happen.

  • My vision ? To build an annual income that will sustain me and my nearest and dearest once we can no longer work.
  • Target ? The annual income I need to live on in retirement. Another way of approaching this is in terms of total pension pot.
  • Time horizon ? e.g. I want to retire no later than age 65.
  • Contribution level ? Most calculators ask for the percentage of income that will be fed into your pension funds, but ultimately this comes down to how much cash you can save.
  • Expected rate of return ? What growth rate might we get from the mix of assets we choose for our portfolio?

To make my retirement plan a little more tangible, I?ve taken to thinking of it as my very own financial farm:

Grow your own retirement.

  • My target income is the crop that I?ll be harvesting in the years to come.
  • My contribution level is the seed that I sow.
  • The time horizon is the length of the growing season.
  • The expected rate of return is the effect of the financial sun, rain, and soil upon my crop.
  • I can even throw on fertilizer to increase the expected rate of return by choosing a riskier asset allocation.

Over the rest of this Special Retirement Week On Monevator! I?ll look at how to turn the factors above into raw numbers that you can feed into a retirement calculator.

As we go, we?ll look at each issue in turn (and magically the four bullet points below will be updated with links, too):

Subscribe now to get each new part emailed to you every morning.

Little evidence of health benefits from organic foods, study finds

ScienceDaily (Sep. 3, 2012) ? You're in the supermarket eyeing a basket of sweet, juicy plums. You reach for the conventionally grown stone fruit, then decide to spring the extra $1/pound for its organic cousin. You figure you've just made the healthier decision by choosing the organic product -- but new findings from Stanford University cast some doubt on your thinking.

"There isn't much difference between organic and conventional foods, if you're an adult and making a decision based solely on your health," said Dena Bravata, MD, MS, the senior author of a paper comparing the nutrition of organic and non-organic foods, published in the Sept. 4 issue of Annals of Internal Medicine.

A team led by Bravata, a senior affiliate with Stanford's Center for Health Policy, and Crystal Smith-Spangler, MD, MS, an instructor in the school's Division of General Medical Disciplines and a physician-investigator at VA Palo Alto Health Care System, did the most comprehensive meta-analysis to date of existing studies comparing organic and conventional foods. They did not find strong evidence that organic foods are more nutritious or carry fewer health risks than conventional alternatives, though consumption of organic foods can reduce the risk of pesticide exposure.

The popularity of organic products, which are generally grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers or routine use of antibiotics or growth hormones, is skyrocketing in the United States. Between 1997 and 2011, U.S. sales of organic foods increased from $3.6 billion to $24.4 billion, and many consumers are willing to pay a premium for these products. Organic foods are often twice as expensive as their conventionally grown counterparts.

Although there is a common perception -- perhaps based on price alone -- that organic foods are better for you than non-organic ones, it remains an open question as to the health benefits. In fact, the Stanford study stemmed from Bravata's patients asking her again and again about the benefits of organic products. She didn't know how to advise them.

So Bravata, who is also chief medical officer at the health-care transparency company Castlight Health, did a literature search, uncovering what she called a "confusing body of studies, including some that were not very rigorous, appearing in trade publications." There wasn't a comprehensive synthesis of the evidence that included both benefits and harms, she said.

"This was a ripe area in which to do a systematic review," said first author Smith-Spangler, who jumped on board to conduct the meta-analysis with Bravata and other Stanford colleagues.

For their study, the researchers sifted through thousands of papers and identified 237 of the most relevant to analyze. Those included 17 studies (six of which were randomized clinical trials) of populations consuming organic and conventional diets, and 223 studies that compared either the nutrient levels or the bacterial, fungal or pesticide contamination of various products (fruits, vegetables, grains, meats, milk, poultry, and eggs) grown organically and conventionally. There were no long-term studies of health outcomes of people consuming organic versus conventionally produced food; the duration of the studies involving human subjects ranged from two days to two years.

After analyzing the data, the researchers found little significant difference in health benefits between organic and conventional foods. No consistent differences were seen in the vitamin content of organic products, and only one nutrient -- phosphorus -- was significantly higher in organic versus conventionally grown produce (and the researchers note that because few people have phosphorus deficiency, this has little clinical significance). There was also no difference in protein or fat content between organic and conventional milk, though evidence from a limited number of studies suggested that organic milk may contain significantly higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids.

The researchers were also unable to identify specific fruits and vegetables for which organic appeared the consistently healthier choice, despite running what Bravata called "tons of analyses."

"Some believe that organic food is always healthier and more nutritious," said Smith-Spangler, who is also an instructor of medicine at the School of Medicine. "We were a little surprised that we didn't find that."

The review yielded scant evidence that conventional foods posed greater health risks than organic products. While researchers found that organic produce had a 30 percent lower risk of pesticide contamination than conventional fruits and vegetables, organic foods are not necessarily 100 percent free of pesticides. What's more, as the researchers noted, the pesticide levels of all foods generally fell within the allowable safety limits. Two studies of children consuming organic and conventional diets did find lower levels of pesticide residues in the urine of children on organic diets, though the significance of these findings on child health is unclear. Additionally, organic chicken and pork appeared to reduce exposure to antibiotic-resistant bacteria, but the clinical significance of this is also unclear.

As for what the findings mean for consumers, the researchers said their aim is to educate people, not to discourage them from making organic purchases. "If you look beyond health effects, there are plenty of other reasons to buy organic instead of conventional," noted Bravata. She listed taste preferences and concerns about the effects of conventional farming practices on the environment and animal welfare as some of the reasons people choose organic products.

"Our goal was to shed light on what the evidence is," said Smith-Spangler. "This is information that people can use to make their own decisions based on their level of concern about pesticides, their budget and other considerations."

She also said that people should aim for healthier diets overall. She emphasized the importance of eating of fruits and vegetables, "however they are grown," noting that most Americans don't consume the recommended amount.

In discussing limitations of their work, the researchers noted the heterogeneity of the studies they reviewed due to differences in testing methods; physical factors affecting the food, such as weather and soil type; and great variation among organic farming methods. With regard to the latter, there may be specific organic practices (for example, the way that manure fertilizer, a risk for bacterial contamination, is used and handled) that could yield a safer product of higher nutritional quality.

"What I learned is there's a lot of variation between farming practices," said Smith-Spangler. "It appears there are a lot of different factors that are important in predicting nutritional quality and harms."

Pod of pilot whales comes ashore on Florida beach

(AP) ? More than 20 pilot whales came ashore on a South Florida beach on Saturday, triggering a daylong effort by state and national officials, nearby residents and others to save them.

By evening, five pilot whales ? two calves and three juveniles ? had been transported to Florida Atlantic University's Harbor Branch Institute for rehabilitation. The rest had died of natural causes or had to be humanely euthanized, said Allison Garrett, a spokeswoman for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's fisheries service.

"It was not possible to rehabilitate them," she told the Associated Press.

The pod of 22 whales came ashore Saturday morning at Avalon Beach State Park in St. Lucie County. They ranged from calves and juveniles to adult whales.

Garrett said it was unclear why the whales became stranded.

"Pilot whales are very social animals," she added. "One scenario could be one of the animals was sick. They won't leave (a sick whale). They'll stay together."

For this reason, it's useless to push pilot whales back into the ocean, Blair Mase, stranding coordinator for NOAA's Southeast Region, told TCPalm.com (http://bit.ly/TJA0D2 ).

"If you push them into the water, they'll just keep coming back and stranding themselves again," said Mase, who was surfing in the area when he noticed people running toward the beached whales.

TCPalm.com reports that hundreds of residents came to the beach to assist with the rescue, helping the animals turn upright so they could breathe better. Volunteers covered the whales with moist towels and poured water over them. Red Cross volunteers helped ensure that volunteers stayed hydrated in the hot sun.

"I think that people want to help animals," said Jacqui Thurlow-Lippisth, a Harbor Branch volunteer who worked with others to tend to juveniles in a shaded inflatable pool. "Especially whales and dolphins, because they are our counterparts in the seas. They're mammals, they're intelligent, they're social. They're a lot like us."

Still, there was a sad undercurrent to the efforts, with rescuers aware that most of the whales were dying.

Garrett said there was no obvious sign of trauma or injury to the whales, but that necropsies would be performed on them. She said officials and volunteers spent the day assessing the health of the whales to see which could be rehabilitated, and then making the others comfortable.

She said the last such beaching in the area came in May 2011, on the Florida Keys.
