Apple, Foxconn set new standard for Chinese workers

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Apple Inc and its main contract manufacturing Foxconn agreed to tackle violations of conditions among the 1.2 million workers assembling iPhones and iPads in a landmark decision that could change the way Western companies do business in China.

Taiwan's Foxconn Technology Group, whose subsidiary Hon Hai Precision Industry assembles Apple devices in factories in China, will hire tens of thousands of new workers, eliminate illegal overtime, improve safety protocols and upgrade workers' housing and other amenities.

It is a response to one of the largest investigations ever conducted of a U.S. company's operations outside of America. Apple had agreed to the probe by the independent Fair Labor Association (FLA) to stem a crescendo of criticism that its products were built on the backs of mistreated Chinese workers.

The association, in disclosing its findings from a survey of three Foxconn plants and over 35,000 workers, said it had unearthed multiple violations of labor law, including extreme hours and unpaid overtime.

FLA President Auret van Heerden expects the agreement between Apple, the world's most valuable listed company, and Foxconn, which supplies 50 percent of the world's consumer electronics, to have far reaching affects.

"Apple and Foxconn are obviously the two biggest players in this sector," he said in an interview. "Since they're teaming up to drive this change, I really do think they set the bar for the rest of the sector."

That could affect brand names that have contracts with the Taiwanese company, including Dell Inc, Hewlett-Packard, Amazon.com Inc, Motorola Mobility Holdings, Nokia Oyj and Sony Corp.

The agreement is a sign of the increasing power of Chinese workers to command higher wages given increasing prices in China, and an ageing workforce that has led to labor shortages.

"Foxconn is proposing this better deal," said van Heerden. "Their competitors will be obliged to offer a similar package just in order to get enough workers."

Working conditions at many Chinese factories supplying Western brands are considerably inferior to those at Foxconn, experts say.

Still, labor costs are a fraction of the total cost of most high-tech devices, so consumers might not see higher prices.

"If Foxconn's labor cost goes up ... that will be an industry-wide phenomenon and then we have to decide how much do we pass on to our customers versus how much cost do we absorb," HP Chief Executive Meg Whitman told Reuters in February.

Under the agreement, Foxconn said it will reduce working hours to 49 per week, including overtime, while keeping total compensation for workers at its current level. The FLA audit found workers in the three factories put in more than 60 hours per week on average during peak production periods.

To keep up with demand, Foxconn will hire tens of thousands of additional workers and build more housing and canteens.

Apple CEO Tim Cook, who took over from the late co-founder Steve Jobs last year, has shown a willingness to tackle the criticism head-on.

"We fully support their recommendations," an Apple spokesman said. "We share the FLA's goal of improving lives and raising the bar for manufacturing companies everywhere."

But New York-based labor advocacy group China Labor Watch said the report failed to address the workers' primary concerns.

"Until Apple shares a larger proportion of its profits with its supplier factories, workers will receive the same pittance for a salary while working around the clock," Li Qiang, the director of China Labor Watch, said in an emailed statement.

The agreement has not gone down well with some Foxconn workers, either.

Chen Yamei, 25, who has worked at a Foxconn factory at Longhua in southern Guangdong province for four years, complained that her salary will drop to just over 2,000 yuan a month ($317) from over 4,000 yuan.

"We are here to work and not to play," she said. "Our income is very important." Another worker was less concerned.

"Working here is just so-so. Working conditions and the pay are all right," said Li Wei, a 20-year-old who has worked at the Foxconn factory for about a year.

"However there are around 100,000 people in there, so sometimes the feeling can be oppressive," Li said, who works eight hours, or a maximum 10 hours, a day.

FIRST PHASE

Hon Hai shares fell on Friday around 1.3 percent, underperforming a rising market. Apple shares, which hit a record high on Wednesday, dropped 1.3 percent on Thursday.

The report marks the first phase of a probe into Apple's contract manufacturers across the world's most populous nation.

Foreign firms have long grappled with working conditions in China, dubbed the world's factory because of its low wages and efficient coastal transport and shipping infrastructure.

Global protests against Apple swelled after reports spread in 2010 of a string or suicides at Foxconn's plants in southern China, blamed on inhumane working conditions and the alienation that migrant laborers, often from impoverished provinces, face in a bustling metropolis like Shenzhen, where two of the three factories the FLA inspected are located.

In months past, protesters have shown up at Apple events - the rollout of the new iPad, the iPhone 4GS and its annual shareholders' meeting - holding up placards urging the $500 billion corporation to make "ethical" devices.

Some have also criticized the FLA for its close alignment with corporations.

The actor Mike Daisey also did much to raise awareness of the issue through his one man show in the United States, "The Agony and the Ecstasy of Steve Jobs". His credibility was damaged though when it emerged parts of his monologue were fabricated.

NEW DORMS

The FLA in its report sought measures that will reduce working hours while ensuring that migrant laborers - often willing to pile up the overtime to make ends meet back home - do not forego much-needed income.

Foxconn committed to building new housing to ease situations where multiple workers were squeezed into rooms that seemed inhumane by Western standards. It agreed to improve accident reporting and help workers enroll for social welfare and increase their participation in committees and other union structures.

The FLA will conduct onsite verification visits to make sure the agreement is implemented, van Heerden said.

Apple is not the first U.S. consumer brand to respond to criticism of working conditions at factories abroad making its products.

Nike Inc implemented wide-ranging changes to improve safety and working conditions after it was rocked by reports in the 1990s that its contractors in China and elsewhere forced employees to work in slave-like conditions for a pittance.

Yet even Nike stopped short of Apple's and Foxconn's hiring and income-boosting spree. Last month, Foxconn said it was raising salaries by 16 to 25 percent, and was advertising a basic monthly wage, not including overtime, of 1,800 yuan ($290) in the southern city of Shenzhen, Guangdong province - where the monthly minimum wage is 1,500 yuan.

Future forays by the FLA over coming months will encompass Apple contractors Quanta Computer Inc, Pegatron Corp, Wintek Corp and other suppliers, all notoriously tight-lipped about their operations.

I admit, I was a bit nervous about the whole Ostomy on Vacation thing.? Before we left, there was a great deal of pondering about how many supplies to bring.? I read a rumor that the pouch would puff up on the plane (false, guys, false, even the pouches with no filter).? I worried that some J-hole would make a big deal at one of the airports.?

Overall, I was very glad to have an ostomy.? No one hassled me at any of the airports.? Completely unwrap and "test" the statue Eric bought?? Yes.? Not one person wanted a peek at the pouch.? They were more concerned with why I had two DVD players.? I emptied before I went through security and again before I got on a plane (as needed).? I had extra supplies (no scissors of course).? It was easy.

In Cambodia, it was no big deal.? The only time anyone even saw it was during a massage, and the woman's main concern was whether it hurt.? Again, I carried extra supplies with me.? Towards the end of the trip, we all got some sort of intestinal thing.? It was super nice not to be tied to a toilet.? Ostomy pouches are so portable!? As long as I could find a bathroom to empty, it was all good.

As far as how many supplies to bring on a trip...I read somewhere to bring three times the amount I would normally need.? That amount of supplies was WAY too much, but I wouldn't have wanted to run short on anything.? I was glad I had plenty of pouches and wafers.

So if you're considering a vacation, don't let an ostomy hold you back!? Vacations rule!!!

The P90X2 Evaluation | Health, Food Allergy and Food Allergies

P90X2 has arrived and it? s the subsequent P90X! This method has become highly anticipated because of the hundreds of thousands regarding insane P90X enthusiasts such as myself personally! In my personal ? ?P90X2 review? ? I? m likely to check out the good As well as the negative of this method.

I? ve stood a possibility to in person workout with Tony Horton and attempt many of the actions which will be in P90X2 we develop the complete P90X Size 3 One-on-One string exactly where Tony Horton trials with some other exercises and in essence makes use of us all because guinea pigs to help set P90X2 with each other. I really wished to present you with my personal extremely ? inside info ? associates glimpse and provide my personal P90X2 workout review of what exactly I? ve encountered and understand to date.

To get started on my personal P90X2 critique, I needed to offer an elementary review of this course. Exactly like P90X, your P90X 2 workout plan will likely be Ninety days prolonged (because name suggests) and it has been recently designed to create on an original P90x Workout. That includes the identical notion of muscle confusion where you stand carrying out a various various exercises. The P90X2 plan is obviously becoming changed upwards in order that you don? t reach some sort of plateau which means you don? t get bored as you use standard health and fitness software programs. That it was likewise developed to acquire your overall health and health and fitness to some whole new levels simply by upping your toughness, sense of balance, speed, core, and athleticism (having a large concentrate on core and sense of balance). P90X2 was created simply by Tony Horton together with other specialist athletics personal trainers all of which will certainly present you with extraordinary effects exactly like P90X.

P90X2 Periods ? P90X2 Evaluate: The P90X2 workout program comes with 14 workout routines (you obtain Only two extra P90X2 Workouts while using Supreme and Deluxe plans) and is also broken up in to 3 phases exactly like P90X. This is the breakdown of your phases and also the target that specific phase-

Step A single ? Groundwork, 3-5 2 or 3 weeks
Step Only two ? Power, 3-6 2 or 3 weeks
Step 3 ? Effectiveness, 3-4 2 or 3 weeks
Restoration Full week

The initial phase with the method is greatly aimed at your core and sense of balance. Throughout this phase you? ll work to construct a compelling basis to construct on for a couple of phases. Many of the P90X2 phase A single training is X2 Core and X2 Balance & Power. X2 Core will center around exercises that concentrate on your core while sporting you are doing actions that can cause a huge amount of fluctuations (in order that you have a greater workout). The X2 Balance & Power workout will force you to work towards your balance and will have a large amount of toughness actions, and exercises with intense activities.

Step Only two regarding P90X should have a tremendous give attention to toughness and definately will incorporate your Plyocide workout. If perhaps you? ve ever before completed an original P90X Plyometrics, then you KNOW that is usually some sort of great workout (it? s usually uncomfortable, yet consequently worth every penny)! Step Only two may also incorporate stomach, Rear, & Balance workout that?s this can be the P90X Upper body and Rear on given. It will likely be nearly the same as P90X Upper body & Rear except that you? ll workout on a great deal of medicine balls along with other systems that can cause fluctuations.

Last but not least, Step 3 regarding P90X2 will likely be aimed around upping your performance. That phase will incorporate your your Delaware.A.Delaware. (Post Initial Potentiation) workouts- PAP Second, and PAP Decrease. That is a progressive workout technique that is being used because of the finest and a lot suit sportsmen in the world. That in essence consists of carrying out a calculated work out quickly and then a great intense work out. This has shown to be able to tremendously enhance power and strength all of which will will fully rip that you simply part.

My personal P90X2 critique wouldn? t always be finish devoid of supplying you with the advantages and disadvantages with the method! Let? s 1st get the negative regarding my personal P90X2 critique bumped out?

It? s Not really, Rewind, Not really for novices! This method had been specially developed to carry out AFTER you? ve completed P90X. P90X2 is not such as P90X exactly where some people have the ability to dive engrossed if they?re within the correct mindset (even when it? s been recently decades because they? ve solved). You should don? t attempt this method when it? s been recently decades because you? ve solved. You should no less than do a complete Ninety days regarding P90X or perhaps Insanity ahead of accomplishing P90X2. Or else, anyone chance bruising on your own through not being properly prepared for this course.

In your case Cardio Addicts, Generally there Isn? t Serious Downright Cardio Physical exercises In P90X2. There is the Plyocide workout (that?s surely cardio) and you?ll be accomplishing substantial period workout routines within the workout routines (exactly where your heartbeat is going through the roof, subsequently moving back down, through the roof, subsequently back down again, and many others.), yet there isn? t particular cardio workout routines similar to Insanity (which in turn truly moves around cardio). That won? t matter for most people, except you? re a protracted range runner. Be simple remedy will be to do a P90X2 Insanity a mix of both when you? re a protracted range runner and desire your endurance.

It? s the subsequent P90X! That?s the truth, this can be a method if you love an original P90X and desires some sort of completely completely new stepped up edition regarding P90X. The P90x Workout provides genuinely altered My well being and hundreds of thousands regarding other people? s existence so we just about all need Much more!

No More 1 hour and 15 Minutes Of Yoga! I understand there are plenty of individuals who are likely to encourage about this! :-) P90X Yoga X had been pretty darn prolonged consequently in P90X2 they? ve decreased this to some more sensible Sixty five minutes prolonged. I understand there are a few folks who hate Yoga and could be content for doing this disappear, yet it? s there for the cause! Accomplish this!

The Training Simply FIVE Days Every week! Via what exactly I? ve been told, your P90X2 regular plan will probably be 5 days prolonged vs . 6 times prolonged similar to P90X. I? m sure we will have the need for individuals 48 hours rest! :-) That can merely help a lot of an individual have the ability to stay with this course greater (you can have breaks off of).

My personal P90X2 critique is becoming pretty prolonged i really feel it? s moment I conclude this here. I get a Great deal more info to express on P90X2, yet I? m to incorporate that facts from now on blogs consequently stay tuned in!

If you?re an P90X, Insanity Grad, OR you have already been working out for many years and they are in great shape, and then make likely to order P90X2 right now. SpotlessCity Will Pick Up Your Soiled, Dirty Laundry

Screen Shot 2012-03-28 at 9.27.54 AMSpotlessCity launched in January and is just now building up steam to disrupt the entire "going to the laundry" industry. Built by Sonny Bajwa and his Brooklyn team, the site allows you to find a dry cleaner and request a pick-up. Bingo, bango, and your clothes are clean. God forbid you should go for a walk of an evening to drop off your unmentionables, but let's not get into that here. According to a January article about the service, Bajwa founded the company after seeing that his wife's chores - cooking, buying food - could be done via laptop while his chore - taking the laundry down the street - required him to leave the house. Thus SpotlessCity was born.

The Mobile Mess: Why Isn't Car Connectivity Better?

Our phones and our cars are colliding. Despite the National Transportation Safety Board's recent call for a nationwide ban on ?in-car cell?phone use, car buyers are increasingly demanding smartphone-style connectivity. And carmakers are scrambling to provide interactive systems that harness or imitate the features of popular handsets. These so-called infotainment systems, such as Ford's Sync and Toyota's Entune, have voice control and Internet connectivity, and they can run apps such as Pandora. In a world where quality engineering can be bought even in entry-level cars, infotainment systems are increasingly seen as a differentiator?but they have become a high-tech headache for automakers.

"It's kind of a mess," says Roger Lanctot, a senior analyst at technology research firm Strategy Analytics. "Because all of these systems are proprietary, it's expensive to deploy content app by app. They are also all brand-new, and they all work differently, so you have usability issues and glitches galore."

THE TECHNOLOGY TRAP

Arguably one of the most advanced infotainment systems on the market is Sync with MyFord Touch, available as an option on all of Ford's consumer models. Its capabilities are formidable: It has touch-sensitive, capacitive buttons; it can understand complex voice commands, make hands-free calls, read your text messages to you, run Pandora from connected smartphone devices, and give you turn-by-turn navigation. But for all of its sophistication, MyFord Touch has been criticized for being slow, cluttered, and confusing. The system is a big reason why Ford fell from fifth place to 23rd in J.D. Power's 2011 Initial Quality Study. Now Ford is sending out more than 300,000 USB drives to update it. Systems like MyFord Touch tap into the cellular-connection and data-processing power of smartphones for many of their functions, but deliver user interfaces that pale in comparison to those of the phones. All of which raises the question: Why don't automakers just use the phone operating systems in the first place?

PHONING IT IN

As it turns out, there are systems in development that can, to a degree, port your smartphone's UI to your vehicle's screen. One such technology is Nokia's MirrorLink. Once the phone is ?connected to the car, MirrorLink essentially turns your dashboard display into a slightly modified version of your smartphone screen?as long as the phone and the vehicle display are ?MirrorLink-capable. MirrorLink has some big backers, including Toyota, General Motors, Nokia, and LG and could start appearing in select vehicles and phones in the U.S. in the next couple of years, Lanctot says. But then again, it may not, since one company notably absent from the MirrorLink supporter list is Apple, the most influential smartphone-maker in the world.

But even if smartphones are superior to most factory-?installed infotainment systems, that doesn't necessarily mean they are an ideal replacement. Andy Gryc is the automotive product manager at QNX, a software company that has provided the code for almost 30 million vehicles on the road. "You have an expectation of how an application behaves on your phone, with a small display and a ton of RAM," he says. "You're used to scrolling around through menus and pinching and zooming and all these things, and when you take that same display and replicate it in the car, the experience isn't the same."

Systems such as MirrorLink also could exacerbate the nettlesome problem of ?driver distraction. When a carmaker creates its own interface, it can control the driving experience. But if the screen in the vehicle is essentially a pass-through to somebody else's software, that raises a big red liability flag. So automakers will want to tightly control which apps and functions are allowed.

Still, using the phone's interface could free carmakers from some of the fast-paced burdens of software development. Vehicles generally take years to design, while smartphone operating systems and apps can be updated every few months.

CUE THE FUTURE

If MirrorLink is the answer, it's only a temporary one. According to Mike Hichme, engineering manager for Cadillac's Cue system, no car can be fully dependent on a phone. "[MirrorLink] is a feature; that's not the solution," he says. Automakers still need to design radio, HVAC, and other basic vehicle controls. No car company is willing to just hand off fundamental parts of the driving experience to a phone.

Plus, it turns out that auto interfaces may be learning some smartphone tricks after all. Hichme's Cue system, set to premiere in three models later this year, can run HTML5, the same software language behind powerful Web apps such as Gmail. HTML5 should make it easier for developers to create apps that run across all platforms?which may ultimately? neutralize the power struggle between smartphone and car. Still, HTML5 doesn't mean an app free-for-all. No one thinks playing Angry Birds in the car is wise.

Unfortunately for automakers, none of this makes the decisions any easier. If a car is just beginning the production process, there's no one answer and no knowing where the industry will be three or four years from now. "It's just painful to have to make these decisions when things are changing too damn fast," ?Lanctot says.

Moon boy ? Blog Archive ? Tailor negotiations- try thinking out of the ...

It is a common misconception that all business negotiations should take place to reduce the price that is being paid for the product or service in question. Well, there are some products and services where there is no scope for negotiation. How can you negotiate with a bespoke tailor? How to reduce the service charges? To request or beg is going to seem cheap. Why should the tailor make an exception for you? Chances are high that the tailor will tell you to take your business elsewhere.

After all, negotiation is not about begging for better deals. It is about creating a situation where the other party realizes that you have understood that the existing deal is not as good as it is made out to be. So, how can you negotiate with somebody who stitches your clothes? Well, why do not you ask for faster service? If time is of importance, then the fact that you are going to receive your clothes faster is automatically going to help you extract more value out of the deal.

Or, you can ask the tailor to make minor cloth accessories like handkerchiefs or a small cloth purse out of the waste cut out from the cloth. You can just request the individual to help you enjoy a better deal value for the money you pay. When you pose such a request, you will be putting the other party in a very difficult position. Reducing the price may not be something that he or she would be interested in. However, creating a handkerchief out of the extra cloth that has been cut off is not an impossible task.

You can easily save a lot of money in the process if you get this service without paying anything extra. Do this three or four times and you will have enough handkerchiefs to manage without spending any thing on the same.

Instagram for Android is only the first step

Instagram has achieved a great deal in its short history, but it has yet to tackle the Android population. With news of Instagram finally hitting Android?s platform, the popular photo-sharing service is taking names for those interested in receiving the Android version upon its official release. But we?re still wondering when that official release will be, and how Instagram for Android will differ from the iOS edition. These are all important questions Instagram faces as the company builds a business out of photo filters and syndication tools.

The real draw for Instagram has been its ease-of-use around its photo capture, adding filtered effects in real-time, creating hashtags, and posting images on Facebook and Twitter. But as a business, Instagram has quite a bit of maturing to do. The photo-sharing app has operated in a relatively walled garden since its initial release in late 2010, only now taking steps to expand its reach through platform integration. The Android edition will certainly broaden Instagram?s user base, but it?s not the only update Instagram has made.

Instagram needs to expand its reach and its business

The most recent partnership for Instagram is with Hipstamatic, opening up to a rival photo-sharing service to access another 4 million users. And while Instagram has no direct tie-ins with another rival, Facebook, third-parties are anxious to integrate the two, such as Vitrue?s latest Pages module which automatically pulls your Instagram photos into your Facebook timeline. In fact, Instagram faces rising competition from networks that are already endowed with features beyond photo-sharing, as Facebook added filters not too long ago.

That?s not all Instagram and Facebook have in common. Both social networks started as photo-sharing sites and had to find their own path to success, Instagram co-founder Kevin Systrom said during an interview at IGNITION West last week: ?It's about going through false starts... Brbn was a false start. The best companies in the world have all had predecessors. YouTube was a dating site. You always have to evolve into something else.?

Instagram has done well to rack up nearly 30 million users to date, but the photo-sharing service will continue to evolve, and rightfully so. In order to become a true business Instagram will need to flesh out an ad network and more product integration to appeal to both brands and consumers alike. And while Android fans have been waiting for what seems an eternity for Instagram to hit Google Play, this is only the beginning of what Instagram is likely to become.

Useful Tricks For Home Improvement | Article Gurus

A lot of people assume that home improvement is just too overwhelming to bother tackling. However, this isn?t true if you can keep an open mind. In the following article, you will be provided with information to help you with your home improvements.

If you are doing any physical exercise outdoors in the heat, you can forget how much time you have spent working out. Staying hydrated is just as essential as safety equipment when it?s hot outside. Remember to take breaks when it comes to manual labor to enjoy your work as well as time to hydrate.

Make sure your plumbing system if properly insulated before winter comes. This should make your system more efficient and keep your hot water hot. Weatherizing tape is easy to apply to plumbing and available from many retailers. The tape plugs into your home?s electrical supply and keep the pipes above the freezing point.

When planning a home improvement project, take care of rewiring and plumbing issues first. These types of repairs usually require access inside your walls, so it makes sense to do them before you have other work done. If you are already repairing or replacing walls, then this is an ideal time to get plumbing or electrical work done.

Take advantage of your outdoor space. A nicely-decorated backyard can be a functional living space, as well. This creates an idyllic outdoor environment for relaxing or cooking out with the family.

To get solid input on which home improvements can increase the value of your home the most, ask your real estate agent. They are knowledgeable as to what people desire when purchasing a home.

Rely on your creativity and unique personality to design original projects. While this is a good idea, you should also make sure that each improvement is practical.

To sum things up, home improvement projects need not feel overwhelming. When making such repairs, remember to always keep an open mind. Everything in this article has been carefully chosen to give you the most vital information that you will need in making home improvements. By using these tips, you can update your home quickly!

BOSTON, MAHuman geneticists have long debated whether the genetic risk of the most common medical conditions derive from many rare mutations, each conferring a high degree of risk in different people, or common differences throughout the genome that modestly influence risk.

A new study by Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) researchers has harnessed data and new analysis tools to address this question in four common diseases: rheumatoid arthritis; celiac disease; coronary artery disease and myocardial infarction (heart attack); and type 2 diabetes.

The study will be electronically published on March 25, 2012 in Nature Genetics.

The researchers developed a new statistical method built upon "polygenic risk score analysis" to estimate the heritable component of these diseases that is explained by common differences throughout the genome.

Their method takes advantage of data from previously published genome-wide association studies, or GWAS, an approach used to scan DNA samples for common genetic markers seen throughout the populationcalled SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms).

According to senior author Robert Plenge, MD, PhD, BWH director of Genetics and Genomics in the Division of Rheumatology, Immunology and Allergy, "We used GWAS data and a Bayesian statistical framework to demonstrate that a substantial amount of risk to these four common diseases is due to hundreds of loci that harbor common causal variants with small effect, as well as a smaller number of loci that harbor rare causal variants."

Using data on rheumatoid arthritis, they estimated that variation in hundreds of locations throughout the genome might explain 20 percent of rheumatoid arthritis risk, after excluding all of the known rheumatoid arthritis genetic risk factors.

They used computer simulations to demonstrate that the underlying genetic risk in rheumatoid arthritis is largely explained by many common alleles rather than rare mutations.

They observed similar results for celiac disease (43 percent), myocardial infarction (48 percent) and type 2 diabetes (49 percent).

"What is remarkable is that our statistical model was broadly applicable to several common diseases, not just rheumatoid arthritis," said Plenge, who is also an assistant professor at Harvard Medical School and an associate member of the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. "Our study provides a clear strategy for discovering additional risk alleles for these and likely many other common diseases."

According to the researchers, these methods can be applied to other genome-wide datasets (e.g., GWAS or whole genome sequencing) to estimate the degree to which there is a genetic component.

One exciting possibility is assessing the genetic basis of individual response to drugs.

"Our method may be particularly useful for diseases and related traits that cannot be easily studied in families," said Eli Stahl, PhD, lead study author, BWH research associate and member of the National Institutes of Health-funded Pharmacogenomic Research Network (PGRN). "For traits such as treatment efficacy or toxicity, we often assume there is a genetic basis to the clinical variability observed among patients. Now, we have the statistical tools to quantify the extent to which this is the case directly."

"Our study reinforces a common thread in the literature, that many subtle differences throughout the genome explain much of the differences in risk for individuals for all kinds of diseasesthis has powerful implications for the genetic architecture of disease, for risk prediction and prognosis, as well as for basic biology and developing new drug targets," said co-senior author Soumya Raychaudhuri, MD, PhD, BWH Division of Immunology, Allergy and Rheumatology, assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.

Tiger Woods Ends PGA Tour Losing Streak, Crushes Field at Arnold Palmer Invitational

More than two years after a huge sex scandal derailed his aura of invincibility and roiled his personal life, Tiger Woods is back to doing what he does best.

Winning.

Woods looked dominant as ever in his Sunday red shirt at the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill, notching his first PGA Tour victory since 2009.

The 36-year-old closed with a 2-under 70 and won by five shots over Graeme McDowell. The tour win was Tiger's first in 923 days, if you can believe it.

"I think he really just kind of nailed home his comeback," McDowell said. "Great to have a front-row seat watching maybe the greatest of all time."

Woods showed flashes of his old self in recent months, even winning the Chevron World Challenge (an unofficial event). But it all came together this week.

Walking off the green, Tiger waved his cap to the crowd. "It's not like winning a major championship or anything," he said. "But it certainly feels really good."

His next appearance will be in a major championship, the Masters, where he played well the past two years even while demonstratively off his game.

The rest of the field is officially on notice April 5.
