William Thompson gets backing of State Senate co-leader Jeffrey Klein for mayor

Bill Thompson, center, candidate for New York City mayor, gets the nod from dissident Dem Jeffrey Klein.

ALBANY ? State Senate co-leader Jeffrey Klein is backing former city Controller William Thompson for mayor, the Daily News has learned.

Klein, who leads a group of four dissident Dems who entered into a power-sharing agreement with Senate Republicans, will make the announcement Monday.

?Bill is clearly the adult in the room,? Klein said, citing ?his experience, his thoughtful approach to governing.?

The Bronx Democrat said Thompson?s experience as a two-term controller and Board of Education president ?suits him perfectly to be mayor in these times.?

Klein said he has long been a backer of Thompson, who put up a valiant fight against Mayor Bloomberg and his billions in the 2009 mayoral race.

?He?s never let me down,? said Klein, who declined to comment on Thompson?s Democratic competition. ?I look forward to working closely with Billy to protect and enhance the city?s quality of life.?

Thompson is locked in a Democratic primary with ex-Rep. Anthony Weiner, City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, Public Advocate Bill de Blasio and city Controller John Liu.
